In the 1960's, three sisters from San Luis Potosi,a central Mexican city rich in tradition, opened the orginal El Jardin on Chicago's blustery North Side (located just a baseball's throw from the ivy walls of Wrigley Field.) Armed only with a small idea for an eatery and a treasure trove of delectable family recipes, the sisters created a restaurant that a few generations later stands as one of Chicago's most essential cullinary landmarks.

El Jardin Norte is owned and operated by Larry Ruiz, shares the history of the restaurant:

Mom

Translated in English, El Jardin means "The Garden." The very beginnings of the restaurant had an outdoor garden. Patrons come to unwind, under the city's glow, in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. The timespan led to many family gatherings and to a few first dates.

Over the course of fourty years, the sisters (including Larry's mom, shown at left), kept busy over the grills, while the restaurant expanded four times to meet the demand of a ravenous public. El Jardin had become a hot-spot for fun, festive meals and many family celebrations as well.

The roots of the family tree have spread and third generations begin to expand. This spurned the creation of El Jardin-Norte. We offer a Carne Asada (steak) menu to our loyal family base as well the world's most infamous margaritas for a few fun first dates. A little liquid courage never hurt anyone. Catering is also available for all sorts of special occasions and events.

El Jardin has remained a family tradition and has continually prided itself in serving delicious and authentic Mexican dishes, always with the our love for excellent food and genuine service.

Besides our special dishes we have a special kids and a full carry-out menu.
